Emergency Plumber Sydney: What Can Wait and What Needs Immediate Attention
Most plumbing faults can wait until morning. A few cannot, and the difference usually comes down to one question: is water still moving where it should not be? A dripping tap can wait. A burst flexible hose under a vanity keeps pouring water into the room until someone finds the stop tap, and it can flood a bathroom or kitchen long before anyone notices.
This page is a triage guide. It sets out which symptoms need a plumber tonight, which can wait for a booked appointment, and exactly what to do in the minutes before help arrives. It also covers the two situations Sydney callers most often get wrong: a suspected gas smell, which is a gas network emergency rather than a plumbing job, and water near electrical fittings, where the safe move is to stay out of the room and only turn the power off if the switchboard can be reached safely.

Slow or blocked drains
Blocked Drains are among the most common plumbing problems in Sydney homes, and most of them are not emergencies. One slow sink is usually a local blockage in the trap or the branch line, and it can wait for a booked appointment. Several fixtures draining slowly at the same time is a different problem. That pattern points to an obstruction further down the line, closer to where all the branches join, and it is the stage before wastewater starts coming back up somewhere.
The three causes we find most often in Sydney homes are tree roots in older clay sewer lines, which is common across suburbs with mature street trees and pre-1980s housing stock, and a great deal of the older Shire and St George housing falls into that bracket; congealed fat and food waste in kitchen lines; and wet wipes, which do not break down no matter what the packet claims.
How it gets diagnosed and cleared depends on the cause:
• Mechanical clearing with an electric eel cuts through roots and soft blockages.
• Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to scour fat, sludge and root matter off the pipe wall, which is what stops the same blockage from returning in three months.
One thing to avoid: repeated doses of chemical drain cleaner on a blockage you cannot see. It rarely clears a root mass or a collapsed section; it sits in the pipe, and it becomes a hazard for whoever opens that line next.
Sewage backing up into the property
Blocked Sewers are always urgent, and not only because of the mess. Sewage carries bacteria, viruses and parasites, so contact with skin, and any contact at all with food preparation surfaces, is a genuine health risk rather than an inconvenience.
The moment you see wastewater rising:
- Stop all water use in the property. Every tap, shower, washing machine cycle and dishwasher cycle adds to what is already coming back up.
- Keep children, pets and anyone with a compromised immune system out of the affected rooms.
- Do not walk through it and then through the rest of the house.
- If you have to enter, wear closed shoes and disposable gloves, and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards even if you did not touch anything.
- Photograph the extent of it before any cleanup starts. Your insurer will want this.
Burst pipes and major leaks
Stay out of the room if water is anywhere near electricity. If water is coming through a ceiling, running down a wall with power points on it, dripping onto a light fitting, or pooling near appliances, do not walk in, and do not touch switches, appliances or anything metal. Only turn the power off yourself if the switchboard is dry, easy to reach and well clear of the water. If the board is wet, or you would have to cross the water to get to it, stay out, keep everyone else out, and call your electricity distributor, or 000 if anyone is in danger. Water and electricity together are the part of a burst pipe that actually hurts people.
Then turn the water off. Your main stop tap is at the water meter. In a freestanding house, it is usually in the front garden near the boundary, in a small covered box at ground level. In a townhouse or duplex, it is often in a shared meter enclosure near the driveway or front fence. In an apartment, there is generally an isolation valve inside the unit, commonly in the laundry, under the kitchen sink or in a service cupboard, and the building’s main valve is controlled by strata. Turn the tap clockwise until it stops.
Find your stop tap today, not tonight. Locate it, check it turns, and photograph it. Two minutes now saves ten minutes of searching in the dark later, and ten minutes is a lot of water.
Often the problem is not a pipe at all. It is the braided flexible hose connecting the tap to the fixture under a sink or vanity. They have a service life of roughly ten years, and they fail without warning, usually while nobody is home. If you can see rust or fraying on the braid, replace it before they go. If you are leaving the property empty for more than a few days, turning off the main stop tap on the way out is cheap insurance.
Overflowing toilet
Stop the water first. There is a small isolation tap on the wall or floor behind the pan, where the flexible hose meets the pipe. Turn it clockwise until it closes. If you cannot find it or it is seized, lift the cistern lid and push the flush valve down by hand to seal it, then shut the main stop tap at the meter.
Do not flush again to see if it clears. Every flush adds more water to a bowl that is already overflowing.
Then work out which problem you have. Lift the lid on the overflow relief gully outside, or check whether the shower and floor waste are also holding water. If the toilet is the only fixture affected, it is almost certainly a blockage in the pan or the branch line, and a plunger used properly may clear it. If other fixtures are backing up as well, the problem is further down the sewer line, and nothing you do at the toilet will fix it. That is a call-out.
If what came up is wastewater rather than clean bowl water, follow the sewage precautions above before you start cleaning.
What to do before the plumber arrives
In order:
- Power off only if the switchboard is safe to reach. If the board is dry and well clear of the water, turn off the main switch before anyone enters the room. If it is wet, or you would have to walk through water to reach it, stay out, keep others out, and call your electricity distributor.
- Water off at the main stop tap. At the meter, turn clockwise until it stops. For a single fixture, use the isolation tap at that fixture instead.
- Gas off, and out of the building, if you can smell gas. Then 131 909 from outside.
- Stop using every fixture if wastewater is backing up anywhere.
- Keep people and pets clear of contaminated water, and out of rooms with active ceiling leaks. Saturated plasterboard collapses.
- Photograph everything before you clean. Wide shots, close-ups, and the water level against a skirting board or door frame for scale. This is what your insurer will assess.
- Move what you can to a dry room. Lift electricals off the floor first, then soft furnishings, then documents.
- Clear access to the meter, the affected area and the overflow relief gully outside, and lock the dog away. Time on site goes into the invoice.
Do not:
- Pour chemical drain cleaner down a blockage you cannot identify. It rarely works on roots or a collapsed line, and it makes the pipe hazardous to open.
- Keep flushing a blocked toilet.
- Reset a tripped safety switch repeatedly while water is still present.
- Start cutting into walls or ceilings to find the leak yourself.
What an emergency plumber actually does on site
Emergency plumbing is really about finding the cause without destroying the building to look for it. That is where the equipment earns its place.
- CCTV drain camera. Locates a blockage or a break to within a metre, and shows whether it is roots, a fat build-up, a foreign object or a collapsed section. This is what determines whether the fix is a clear, a repair or a section of pipe replaced.
- Acoustic and thermal leak detection. Finds concealed leaks under slabs and inside walls without opening them up on a guess.
- Pipe locator and sonde. Traces the route and depth of the line so any excavation happens in the right place, once.
- Hydro-jetter. Clears fat, sludge and root matter properly rather than punching a hole through it that closes over again in a few weeks.
- Electric eel. Cuts root masses in older clay sewer lines.

Frequently asked questions
Is a blocked drain a plumbing emergency?
One slow sink is not. It can wait for a booked appointment. It becomes urgent when several fixtures drain slowly at once, when wastewater rises through a floor waste, shower or toilet, or when the overflow relief gully outside is discharging. Those signs point to a blockage in the main sewer line.
Who do I call for a gas leak in Sydney?
Not a plumber first. Leave the building, avoid switches and phones inside, and call Jemena Gas Networks on 131 909 from outside. Call 000 if anyone feels unwell or there is a fire risk. Once the network has made it safe, a licensed gas fitter repairs pipework and appliances.
Where is my water stop tap?

Who pays for an emergency plumber in a rental?
The landlord. Under NSW tenancy law, urgent repairs include a burst water service, a blocked or broken toilet, a serious roof leak, a gas leak, flooding or serious flood damage, and a failure or breakdown of the water supply or of an essential service such as hot water. Tell the landlord or agent straight away, and in writing if you can. If they cannot be reached and have had a reasonable opportunity to act, a tenant can arrange the urgent repair using a licensed tradesperson and claim back the reasonable cost, up to a capped amount of $1,000, which the landlord must reimburse within 14 days of receiving written notice and receipts. Other conditions apply, so confirm the current cap and the process with NSW Fair Trading on 13 32 20.
